Job Description/Requirements
The Agronomist Officer will be responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring climate-smart agriculture initiatives at Wilmat Development Foundation. The role involves working with farmers through the Farmer Field Schools (FFS) approach, promoting bloc farming models, and supporting sustainable agricultural practices to improve productivity, food security, and environmental resilience. The officer will engage with smallholder farmers, provide technical expertise, organize training sessions, and ensure the adoption of innovative agricultural techniques for sustainable livelihoods.
The position requires a strong background in agronomy, practical experience in farmer engagement, and the ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders.
Requirements
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Agriculture, Agronomy, Environmental Science or a related field.
- At least 1 year of experience in agronomy, farmer training or implementing agricultural development programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of climate-smart agriculture practices, Farmer Field Schools and bloc farming models.
- Practical experience in engaging smallholder farmers and rural communities.
- Proficiency in agricultural extension techniques and participatory approaches.
- Strong skills in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Excellent , organizational, and interpersonal skills.communication
- Proficiency in English and local languages i.e, Lusoga, Lumasaba, Luganda (most preferred).
- Mobilize farmers to participate in Farmer Field Schools (FFS) and bloc farming activities.
- Conduct field demonstrations and training sessions on climate-smart agricultural practices, such as crop rotation, soil management, agroforestry, and water conservation.
- Support farmers in adopting climate resilient seeds, inputs and technologies to enhance productivity and sustainability.
- Establish and monitor bloc farms to showcase best practices and optimize collective farming models.
- Provide tailored training and mentoring to farmers on sustainable farming techniques and climate adaptation strategies.
- Strengthen farmer group dynamics, leadership, and decision-making to ensure the sustainability of Farmer Field Schools.
- Organize workshops and learning visits to encourage knowledge sharing among farmers and stakeholders.
- Regularly assess the performance of farmer groups, bloc farms, and other agricultural initiatives.
- Collect, analyze, and report data on crop yields, soil health, and climate adaptation outcomes.
- Work with local governments, agricultural extension officers, and community-based organizations to align activities with national and local agricultural strategies.
- Build partnerships with agribusinesses, suppliers, and buyers to support value chain development and market access for farmers.
