Teachers are responsible for the well-being, supervision, safety, and education of the children in the preschool.

Job Description/Requirements

Teachers are responsible for the well-being, supervision, safety, and education of the children in the preschool. Teachers regularly observe, document, and assess children throughout the day to ensure each child’s needs are addressed individually. Other duties include regular meetings with parents, planning and conducting appropriate lessons, and facilitating parent/teacher conferences. .  


Qualifications  

  • Educational Degree: Teaching Certificate/Diploma in Early Child Development (preferably a  Bachelor’s Degree in ECD or Education) 
  • Experience: Three to five years of teaching experience, preferably in an international setting.  
  • Knowledge of The Reggio Emilia Approach and Project Based Learning desired.  
  • Skills: Must be able to work in a diverse team situation. 
  • Must have excellent communication and instructional skills and the ability to be flexible. 
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in  English and use grammatically correct language.  


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE 

  • Considers the background, special needs, and interest of each child.  
  • Treats each child with dignity and respect. Use positive guidance techniques.  
  • Maintains a safe, healthy, nurturing, learning environment. Strives to prevent injuries. Handles emergencies and injuries appropriately.  
  • Understands and implements emergency procedures. Can administer CPR/First Aid, including lifting and carrying injured children. 
  • Uses proper lifting procedures.  
  • Must be physically and mentally able to reach appropriately and immediately to unexpected  circumstances.  
  • Maintains professional conduct when working with parents, staff, and visitors, avoiding unnecessary communication/gossip.  
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding children and families.  
  • Maintains educational material and equipment.  
  • Maintains good rapport and working relationships with other staff members.  
  • Participates in all staff training sessions, meetings, and programs. Flexible to changing schedules.  
  • Willing to perform other duties, if requested to ensure a safe, healthy, nurturing environment for children and families.  


CURRICULUM 

  • Plan and conduct engaging lessons in a play-based, child-centered, academic setting.  
  • Understand and respect the philosophy, core values, and mission and vision statement of the school and plan lessons in accordance with these.  
  • Excellent understanding of the principles of child development and preschool educational methods.  
  • Employ a variety of educational techniques to teach children.  
  • Guide children to develop in all areas of learning through a carefully constructed curriculum.   
  • Ensure that the school environment is developmentally appropriate.  
  • Facilitate a weekly afterschool club.  


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and professional development.  
  • Stay up to date on the latest trends in Early Childhood Education. 
  • Create an Individual Professional Growth Development Plan and implement it.  


STUDENT PROGRESS AND ASSESSMENT 

  • Observe each child to help them improve their social competencies and build self-esteem.  
  • Encourage children to interact with each other and resolve occasional arguments.  
  • Assess children regularly both informally and formally. Use assessments to track child’s  progress, plan accordingly and support children’s growth and development.  
  • See that observations, assessments, and portfolios are kept for each child on an ongoing basis.  
  • Regularly observe children and maintain records. 
  • Write weekly documentations for children to track progress and interests.  


COMMUNICATION 

  • Communicate with parents about programs, school, child progress, and conduct parent/teacher  conferences.  
  • Maintain open communication with parents to understand child’s background and psyche.  
  • Communicate openly, honestly, and respectfully with all staff members.  


COLLABORATION AND TEAMWORK 

  • Work cooperatively in a team with other staff and be a mentor to the Teaching Assistants.  
  • Collaborate with other educators.  
  • Facilitate weekly meetings with teaching partners and other educators that include discussions of individual children, plans, assessments, and health and safety practices.  
  • Work cooperatively with the administration in achieving the goals and objectives of the school.  


SCHOOL COMMUNITY AND EVENTS 

  • Participate and assist in the organization of all school events.  


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • Pass a criminal background check. 
  • Provide a clean bill of health from a reputable clinic.  
  • Able to lift up to 25 kilos.  
  • Able to walk, bend, stand, squat, or sit on the floor (with children) throughout the work day. - Able to physically respond quickly in an emergency. 
  • Maintain a clean and tidy environment consistent with health and safety standards.  - Supervise children to ensure they are safe at all times. 
  • Know the dietary restrictions and allergies of all children.  
  • Assist in set up of the indoor and outdoor environments, and learning centers.
